Another one

In May of 2011 I blogged about some of the bicycle accidents i've experienced.
Now 3 years later, as I type with a cast on my left wrist, I have another story to add.

Over two weeks ago on a warm & sunny Sunday afternoon I decided to go for a ride.  While filling my water bottle, I asked my husband, "Do you pray for me when I'm on my bike?" He said he did. Later he told me that after he prayed that day, he thought, "But she still needs to be careful".
I was on my usual route and as I entered the bike lane the thought entered my mind, "It would really be bad if I was hit by a car!".  I was planning to turn left at the next street. While still peddling, I looked over my left shoulder for any on coming traffic. The street was clear, so I leaned on my bike to proceed into the left turn lane. I had just barely moved when "BAM". I was hit! Realizing that I was lying in the street; I got up as quickly as I could and hobbled over to the curb falling into the grass. I kept repeating "No, Oh God, No!" I was in a lot of pain. A young woman stood over me with fear on her face. "Your'e okay?, Are you Okay? I'm SO sorry!!"

To shorten the story, a man dialed 911 and emergency vehicles quickly took over the area. The young woman had called my husband, giving him very little details. He was shocked when he came upon the commotion. He quickly made his way to where I was lying in the grass and held my hand. "I'm here, are you alright?" I was pretty shaken, but very coherent. I heard that my helmet was cracked. I heard an officer tell my husband that he's seen much worse. I also heard the driver of the vehicle tell an officer that the only damage to her car was her passenger side mirror. My bicycle wasn't damaged at all!

The medics were very kind and did a sufficient check of my condition. I refused to be taken by ambulance, so my husband took me to the E.R. The 2 1/2 hour wait was shortened, because I was moved to trauma. My blood pressure was very low and they were afraid of internal bleeding. I had a CT scan and X-rays of my left wrist. It seemed to take forever to hear the results and I worried a little, but was mostly thankful. The doctor finally came: no internal bleeding, no concussion, 2 fractured ribs and my radius was fractured in my left wrist. Not too bad. I did have some road rash and quite a bit of bruising. Eventually a large hematoma formed on my left hip. But in the end, I was very fortunate!

In spite of the pain & constrictions, I see  many reasons to be thankful and I see how God protected me from a much worse situation!

Four days later we were in North Carolina. We had been planning this trip for several weeks, and decided we would not cancel. The vacation was not like we had originally imagined, but it was a blessing. I was able to rest and start to recover while surrounded by the beauty of the Smokey Mountains. Back home the weather was cold and rainy, while we had mostly sunshine and temps in the low 80's. My husband was able to give me his full attention and help care for me while my body began to heal. We had fun site seeing, reading, eating and relaxing. We connected in the evenings while sitting outside, looking up at the stars and having heartfelt conversations. The trip helped to bond our relationship to an even deeper level.

The longer I live, the more I see how our creator is involved in our lives.
He uses everything to bring us into a closer relationship with him. He is the perfect Father, who has complete, unconditional love for us. It is more than the deepest ocean or the farthest star. His love causes a desire in me to want to surrender my life even more to Him and trust him more intensely than I ever have.

~Your roots will grow down into God’s love and keep you strong.  And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is." ~Ephesians 3:17b-18
