Do you remember the children's book, The Little House by Virginia Lee Burton? It was one of my favorites. The little cottage was so happy living in the country with the field of daisies and the fruit trees nearby watching the children playing.
As the years went by the city slowly spread into the country. Eventually the little house was surrounded by tall buildings, trains, traffic, smoke and smog. I remember how sad the little house looked in the illustration.
This image also reminds me of a parable that Jesus shared in Matthew 13 about seeds being sown on different types of soil. Some of the seeds fell among the thorn bushes. The worries of life choked the seed, and it could not grow properly.
Neither the little house nor the soil chose to be surrounded by something that smothered their freedom. But life is like a freight train speeding down the tracks; there is no way we can stop it! We manage to survive day in and day out till one day our life feels similar to treading water in a deep dark ocean, gasping for air. "How did this happen?"
Lately I have realized the value of slowing down in life. And the importance of finding a time of solace every day to spend with my maker. ~ "With the hectic pace of your lives, the incessant noise...it is no wonder the ancient path of silence and solitude is lost to most believers in the West. But we must take the time." ~ Peter Scazzero
Even the Son of God took time away from the pressing and needy crowds to spend time alone with his Father. He, more than anyone had the excuse of being too busy. Daily he was swamped with the needs and demands of his followers. Yet, he found time to pull away.
I understand that for many of you (especially those with children still living in your home) time alone seems next to impossible. But if you ask the Holy Spirit to give you a gift of 15-20 minutes alone with your Savior; He will answer. Pray that you will be shown the best time for each day where you will be able pull away for a few minutes. Listen and don't ignore the Spirit's prompting, thinking that you can do one more thing first. If you do, you may find that you have missed the opportunity for that day.
When we take time alone with our Father the reward is beyond words. If we allow ourselves to be too busy to stop and sit in His presence, we miss out on the most precious time of the day.
Ask Him for an opportunity to spend some time alone with him each day. Why wouldn't God answer that prayer?
He always has time for us!
