The year:1983-1985 ~ The city: Rochester, MN
---
Dan & I were in our first year of marriage, we were employed at KFSI radio and expecting our first child.
I remember getting the phone call from fireman Chuck Hermann inviting us over to their house to watch a documentary on the development of a human baby. Chuck & Pam were another young couple in our church who already had two children.
The four of us really hit it off that night and immediately became close friends. We spent lots of time together in the 2 years we lived in Rochester.
The guys' schedules sometimes allowed for us to spend an afternoon together. All of us, including the children, would pile into their 1960's Lincoln Continental and go to garage/yard sales. We would usually end up at Shakey's pizza for lunch. They gave free balloons to children. Our husbands would request two helium filled balloons that were not tied off. That way they could breathe in helium and make their voices sound like munchkins. Chuck would do his auctioneer calling and Dan would recite the weather forecast with his radio voice.
It was cheap entertainment. None of us had much money, but we sure had fun.
Chuck could be described as a person who was full of life with endless energy. He had a contagious laugh and was a bit mischievous. Chuck loved Jesus and people.
The Hermanns were the type of friends where we could drop by their house anytime and always feel welcome. It was a sad day when we told them goodbye, because we were moving. But we kept in touch over the years.
About 20 years later we took a trip back t
o Rochester and met up with Chuck and Pam. They were the same fun couple, but had matured over the years and became deeper individuals. Something that occurs as a result of living life. Their dedication to helping others was evident.
Chuck was still full of life and energy and had invested that into his family, church and community. Chuck had moved up to battalion chief at the fire station and was highly respected in the city.
Our visit felt like old times in some ways. Especially when chuck took us on a wild ride in a Ford Mustang Shelby GT500. When I told Pam that Chuck was going to give us a ride around their property in the Polaris. She said, "I wouldn't advise it." Ha ha, I totally understand why she said that. It was the craziest ride I ever had, but we laughed the whole time.
That night We sat around a HUGE campfire and caught up on each others' lives. We shared old memories, talked about our children and shared what God has taught us over the past 20 years. We were amazed to hear of several miracles God had performed for their family.

August 4, 2011 A fatal accident occurred and Chuck's soul left his body.
I often think of Pam and pray for her. I can't imagine losing your best friend and soul mate.

My heart aches for Pam, but it makes me joyful when I see her smiling face in photos. I know she has a huge hole in her life and is trusting God to fill it. She has faith that her and Chuck will be together in eternity and we also look forward to seeing him again.
